ARC Foundation announces wind-down after nearly two decades of advancing inclusive education

After nearly two decades of working to create safer, more inclusive learning environments for children and youth across Canada, ARC Foundation is winding down its operations.

Following an extensive review of ARC’s financial position, organizational circumstances and future outlook, ARC’s Board of Directors determined that the organization could no longer continue operating sustainably. ARC will now begin an orderly wind-down, focused on meeting its obligations responsibly and supporting its employees through the transition.

This is not the ending we hoped for. But as we bring ARC Foundation’s work to a close, we do so with enormous pride in what has been built — and profound gratitude to the people who built it.

ARC was founded in 2007 on the belief that children and youth of all sexual orientations and gender identities deserve safer, more inclusive learning environments. Over time, that belief became work carried forward by educators, partners, supporters and communities across Canada, and ultimately something much larger than any one organization.

At the heart of that work is SOGI 123. Since 2016, the program has equipped educators and schools to create more inclusive environments for all students. Independent research has demonstrated its impact. A 2024 UBC SARAVYC study drawing on a decade of data from nearly 100,000 B.C. students found reductions in bullying and discrimination based on sexual orientation. This impact belongs to the employees whose passion and dedication brought this work to life; the educators who put it into practice every day; the school and district leads who championed inclusion; the partners who helped strengthen SOGI 123; and the funders and supporters whose commitment made it possible.

To everyone who has been part of ARC Foundation and the championing of SOGI 123: thank you.

As ARC winds down, the Board is exploring a transition of SOGI 123 to a values-aligned organization that could build on the program, resources and relationships developed over the past decade. However, SOGI 123’s legacy does not depend on what comes next. It is already reflected in the lives of the youth and communities it has reached.

Organizations have beginnings and endings. ARC Foundation may be coming to an end, but what we built together, and the difference it has made, will endure.
